Using miniature figures and symbolic play in the sand, clients can safely explore experiences, process trauma, and discover new perspectives.

What Is Sand Tray Therapy?

Sand Tray Therapy is a form of expressive therapy where clients create scenes or worlds using miniature figures placed in a tray filled with sand. These visual stories allow people to express feelings, conflicts, memories, and hopes that might be too overwhelming or complex to verbalize directly.

Who Can Benefit from Sand Tray Therapy?

Sand Tray Therapy is versatile and effective for clients of all ages:

Children: Children naturally gravitate toward sand tray work. It allows them to express big feelings, work through fears, tell stories about their inner worlds, and resolve emotional struggles using creativity and play.
• Teens: For adolescents, sand tray can be a powerful tool to explore identity, relationships, school pressures, trauma, or future goals.
• Adults: Adults often discover that sand tray offers a different doorway into healing—bypassing overthinking and allowing deeper emotional insight.

How Sand Tray Therapy Works

In a typical Sand Tray Therapy session:
• Clients select from a wide array of miniature figures, symbols, and natural objects.
• Using the sand and miniatures, they create a scene, world, or story that represents their feelings, experiences, or internal conflicts.
• The therapist may offer gentle reflections, ask curious questions, or simply witness the process, allowing meaning to unfold at the client’s pace.
