Helping Couples Strengthen, Heal, and Grow — Together

Every relationship has its seasons — moments of closeness, moments of distance, and times when connection feels harder than it should. At Seasons Psychotherapy Associates, we know that strong relationships don’t just happen; they’re built intentionally, through trust, communication, and shared meaning. That’s why many of our couples therapists are trained in or informed by the Gottman Method, a highly researched, practical approach to building lasting love. Whether you’re facing conflict, drifting apart, or simply wanting to deepen your bond, Gottman Method Couples Therapy offers a roadmap for creating a relationship that feels safe, connected, and resilient.

What Is the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method is based on over 40 years of research with thousands of couples, developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. Their work revolutionized the understanding of relationships by moving beyond theory into what real couples actually experience day-to-day. In fact, through observing patterns like communication styles, emotional connection, and conflict behavior, Dr. John Gottman became able to predict divorce with over 90% accuracy in research settings — simply by watching how couples interacted.

What he and Dr. Julie Gottman found is that it’s not whether couples argue — it’s how they argue, how they repair, and how they stay emotionally connected through the inevitable ups and downs that makes all the difference. The Gottman Method focuses on strengthening three essential areas:

  • Friendship and emotional intimacy
  • Healthy conflict management
  • Shared meaning and life goals

What Gottman Method Therapy Might Feel Like

In a Gottman-informed couples therapy process, you and your partner will work with your therapist to understand the deeper dynamics in your relationship — including how small moments of connection, or disconnection, create lasting impact. Together, you’ll learn:

  • How to nurture friendship, admiration, and emotional closeness
  • How to identify and avoid the “Four Horsemen” — criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling — that research shows can predict relationship breakdown
  • How to repair after disagreements and prevent small hurts from turning into larger wounds
  • How to turn toward each other instead of away, building a reservoir of goodwill that carries you through conflict and change
  • How to dream and plan for a future you both feel excited about

When Gottman Method Couples Therapy May Help

Couples often seek therapy when they are:

  • Feeling disconnected, lonely, or emotionally distant
  • Caught in repetitive arguments without resolution
  • Struggling with trust, intimacy, or emotional wounds
  • Preparing for major life transitions like marriage, parenting, or blending families
  • Recovering from betrayals, including emotional or physical infidelity
  • Simply wanting to invest in keeping their relationship strong

Our Approach at Seasons Psychotherapy Associates

At Seasons, we know no two relationships are alike. Some of our couples therapists are formally trained in the Gottman Method, while others thoughtfully weave Gottman-based principles into their broader couples work. We don’t pick sides. We don’t keep score. We focus on helping you both feel heard, supported, and empowered to rebuild a relationship that feels fulfilling, respectful, and real.

Relationships are not static — they are living, growing parts of our lives. With intention and care, they can become even stronger than before.
